The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has stated that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, aims to address fiscal challenges facing the country as the election approaches on January 16, 2027. The party emphasizes that Obi, along with his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is committed to halting the erosion of Nigeria’s commonwealth.

In a recent statement, Dr. Chiogo Constance Ikokwu, spokesperson for the NDC National Presidential Campaign Council, highlighted the concerns surrounding the removal of the fuel subsidy. The party criticized President Bola Tinubu’s approach, pointing to the contradiction between anticipated benefits from the subsidy removal and ongoing challenges, including increased governmental borrowing and insufficient funding for national budgets.

The statement reflects the NDC’s concerns about the socioeconomic conditions in Nigeria, emphasizing that citizens deserve clarification regarding the fiscal advantages promised by the government. It raised questions about the efficacy of Tinubu’s policies, particularly in light of rising poverty, unemployment, and insecurity.

The NDC’s reactions come after President Tinubu addressed supporters at a campaign rally in Akwa Ibom State, where he criticized Obi for his handling of erosion issues during his tenure as governor of Anambra State. Although he did not name Obi directly, the President implied that Obi evaded responsibility for the crisis while claiming his own administration made strides to combat coastal erosion in Lagos State.

In response, the NDC asserted that Obi and Kwankwaso would not permit Nigeria to persist in its current trajectory of high borrowing without tangible benefits for the populace. The NDC highlighted Obi’s legacy in Anambra State, noting that he left a significant investment portfolio, including $500 million, when he completed his term in 2014. In contrast, the party referenced statistics from the Debt Management Office regarding the external debt of Lagos State during Tinubu’s administration.

The statement further argued that Tinubu’s policies have contributed to financial mismanagement, including a controversial pension scheme for former governors, which the NDC termed excessive. They contended that unlike Tinubu, Obi avoided creating such burdensome entitlements while in office.

The NDC framed the Obi-Kwankwaso candidacy as an opportunity for a shift away from dependency on debt and towards responsible governance. They drew historical parallels, cautioning that without changes in fiscal policy, Nigeria could face significant economic challenges similar to those experienced by other nations throughout history.

The statement ultimately underscored Obi’s previous efforts to combat erosion in Anambra, citing his role in initiating projects with the World Bank aimed at addressing environmental issues in the state.

The NDC concluded by reiterating its commitment to reversing fiscal mismanagement and ensuring economic opportunities for Nigerians, both now and in future generations.
