Afrobeat Artist Davido Criticizes Music Promoter’s Comments on Genre’s Viability

Afrobeat artist Davido has publicly criticized Paulo Okoye, a music promoter and partner of actress Iyabo Ojo, following remarks he made about the state of Afrobeat music.

Okoye questioned whether the genre is “dead or in coma” while expressing concerns over the performance fees of Nigeria’s top Afrobeat artists. This statement prompted a response from Bankulli, a Grammy-nominated singer and music executive, who contended that Okoye’s comments stemmed from financial limitations.

In a response to Bankulli’s assertions, Davido reinforced the sentiment by commenting on social media, referring to Okoye as “broke.”

This exchange comes nearly two years after Okoye publicly supported Davido during criticisms related to the artist’s remarks on Nigeria’s economic situation made on “The Big Homies House” podcast.

Iyabo Ojo confirmed her relationship with Okoye during her 45th birthday celebration in December 2022.
