ASUU gives 20 universities 14-day ultimatum, threatens strike

Academic Staff Union of Universities Threatens Strike Over Unfulfilled Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed branches in 20 universities to issue a 14-day ultimatum to their administrations, signaling potential strike action due to the federal government’s failure to implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement.

This decision was made during ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja over the weekend. The meeting took place on August 8 and 9, 2026.

In a statement signed by ASUU President Christopher Piwuna, the council expressed discontent with what it termed the inconsistent application of the agreement and highlighted the government’s failure to provide the necessary funding for its full implementation.

The union also criticized several visitors to state-owned universities for their lack of adherence to the agreement.

In light of these concerns, NEC authorized branches that sought approval to initiate procedures for industrial action, contingent upon the issuance of the ultimatum.

  • Nasarawa State University, Keffi
  • Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai
  • University of Medical Sciences, Ondo
  • Gombe State University
  • Plateau State University, Bokkos
  • Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba
  • Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma
  • Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa
