Edo Police Zone Honoring Fallen Officers, New Leadership Promises Community Focus
Benin City, Edo State — In a solemn acknowledgment of their sacrifice, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Monday Agbonika highlighted the bravery of police officers who lost their lives while serving as Commissioners of Police in the Edo State Command. Agbonika, who previously held the role of state police commissioner, emphasized that these officers paid the ultimate price in defense of national security and the safety of citizens.
During his tenure, Agbonika faced numerous challenges, including widespread protests involving youths, students, civil society organizations, parents, and the local business community. He made these remarks on August 10, 2026, during the handover ceremony to his successor, Commissioner Patrick Daaor.
Reflecting on his experiences, Agbonika noted that establishing trust with the community was one of his most significant challenges. “Winning the trust and confidence of the people of Edo State was crucial,” he said. He expressed satisfaction that, despite the hurdles, the community began to understand and support the police strategies, leading to marked progress in law enforcement.
Agbonika advised Daaor to continue strengthening relationships with community stakeholders as part of a comprehensive approach to security. “Engagement with civil society organizations, traditional leaders, and various community sectors is essential for effective policing,” he emphasized.
In his first address as the new Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor pledged to prioritize community policing and maintain an open-door policy to enhance engagement. He assured residents of a responsive and proactive police force, dedicated to addressing crime effectively.
Daaor committed to building upon his predecessor’s achievements, stating, “We will work to further win the trust of the good people of Edo State and ensure that every officer respects every citizen.” He also reminded his officers to maintain professionalism and civility while executing their duties.
