Nigeria and Canada Enhance Health Sector Cooperation

Nigeria and Canada are set to enhance collaboration in seven critical areas of the health sector, targeting improvements in Nigeria’s healthcare system. Key focus areas include workforce development, sustainable financing, digital innovation, and local production of medicines.

A statement from Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, released on August 6, indicated that the partnership expansion follows a high-level meeting between Coordinating Minister Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate and Canada’s Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. David Sproule, on August 5.

During the discussion, Prof. Pate emphasized the Nigerian government’s ongoing reforms aimed at creating a more resilient and self-sustaining health system. He noted that these reforms are intended to bolster domestic health financing, enhance institutional capabilities, and reduce reliance on foreign support.

The following areas have been identified for deepened cooperation:

Health Workforce Development: Both nations will strengthen training and retention efforts for healthcare professionals.
Sustainable Health Financing: Collaboration will focus on financing models that enhance domestic health funding and reduce dependence on external aid.
Digital Health Innovation: The partnership aims to leverage technology for improved healthcare delivery and system sustainability.
Medical and Health Education: Support will be directed towards pre-service education, simulation laboratories, and professional certification for healthcare workers.
Local Production of Medicines and Diagnostics: Both countries will explore joint efforts in manufacturing pharmaceuticals and diagnostics to increase health security in Nigeria.
Primary Healthcare and Resilient Health Systems: Canada has expressed support for Nigeria’s initiatives to strengthen primary healthcare as part of broader health reforms.
Ethical Health Worker Mobility: The two countries will work to facilitate beneficial movement of healthcare professionals while ensuring that Nigeria retains its ability to train and develop its workforce.
