Two Men Die in Sewage Pit Accident in Aba, Police Arrest Tenants
Aba, Abia State — Two young men contracted to remove sewage from a building died Sunday night after an accident in a three-storey structure located at No. 10 Powerline off Omuna Road.
According to reports, the men were using a ladder and buckets when the ladder broke, causing them to fall into the sewage pit. Emergency responders retrieved their bodies, which have since been transferred to a local mortuary.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) sealed the building to facilitate a thorough investigation. Okezie Ezengwa, the Deputy General Manager of ASEPA’s Aba zone, expressed sorrow regarding the fatalities, citing carelessness and poor environmental practices as contributing factors.
Ezengwa highlighted the dangers of manual sewage removal techniques, urging the community to employ approved vendors for such services. “We have been advocating against the use of manual methods in sewage evacuation,” he stated. “Using a ladder to climb into a pit and scooping sewage with buckets poses serious risks.”
Authorities are continuing their investigation, and the arrested tenants are currently being questioned.
