Road crash claims 18 lives, injures 22 others on Niger road
A road accident involving a heavy-duty truck in Wuya village along the Bida-Mokwa Road in Niger State has resulted in the deaths of 18 individuals.
The crash occurred on Wednesday morning when the truck veered off the road and struck a bridge at a sharp bend. Aishatu Sa’adu, the Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the details of the incident. She reported that it was a solo crash involving a truck carrying goods and 42 passengers, including one female and 41 males.
Sa’adu explained that the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to it plummeting from the road into the bridge. The accident claimed the lives of 17 male passengers and the sole female passenger, all of whom died at the scene. Additionally, 22 male passengers sustained various injuries, while two passengers were unharmed.
The deceased have been taken to the hospital’s mortuary, and the injured are currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre in Bida.
The Sector Commander urged drivers to avoid operating vehicles when they feel fatigued, attributing the cause of the accident to driver fatigue.
