Benue State Police Rescue Newborn and Arrest 11 Suspects in Theft Case
The Benue State Police Command has successfully rescued a newborn baby who was allegedly stolen shortly after birth from a healthcare facility in Gboko, located in the Gboko Local Government Area. Authorities have apprehended 11 suspects related to the incident.
In a statement released on Thursday, police spokesperson Orchia Aondogwu outlined the events surrounding the case. On August 12, 2026, at approximately 11 a.m., officers from A Division, Gboko, received a report from Aondofa Chia indicating that his wife had given birth at the facility, and the child had vanished shortly thereafter.
Following the report, police initiated an investigation, which resulted in the questioning of nine individuals believed to have information regarding the baby’s disappearance. Aondogwu noted that additional inquiries led to the arrest of two more suspects later that same evening, including the principal suspect, 35-year-old Mrs. Nguhemen Asugh, who is accused of stealing the infant. The baby was safely recovered from her custody and reunited with its mother.
With the arrests made, the total number of individuals in police custody related to this case now stands at 11. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full details of the incident, the involvement of all suspects, and their respective degrees of culpability.
