Suspected Bandits Abduct 14 Passengers in Benue State
Benue State authorities report that approximately 14 passengers were abducted by suspected bandits while traveling from Enugu State to Abuja on Thursday night. The incident occurred along the Ankpechi–Omutele road within Ohimini Local Government Area.
According to preliminary reports, the gunmen ambushed a commercial bus, forcibly leading the passengers into nearby woods before abandoning the vehicle on the roadside.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident, with spokesperson DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu stating that five of the kidnapped individuals, including a four-year-old boy, were successfully rescued in the early hours of Friday.
Nine additional passengers remain in the custody of their abductors, and police have initiated a coordinated rescue operation to secure their release.
During the operation, there was an exchange of gunfire between law enforcement and the suspected kidnappers. One rescued victim sustained injuries from a gunshot and is currently receiving treatment at a medical facility in Otukpo.
Aondongu emphasized that police operatives, in collaboration with other security agencies, are intensifying efforts to ensure the safe recovery of the remaining hostages, prioritizing their safety throughout the operation.
Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, acknowledged the distress of the victims’ families and the community, confirming that ongoing efforts are being made to secure the release of those still held captive.
Authorities have urged residents of the surrounding communities to remain calm and vigilant, encouraging the public to provide credible information to assist in the rescue operation and mitigate future incidents.
Police officials assured the public that they would continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
