Troops repel ISWAP attack, recover AK-47s, RPG launcher in Borno
Troops from the Joint Task Force North East, operating under the mandate of Operation HADIN KAI, successfully repelled an attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants at Forward Operating Base Mandaragirau in the Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, as the terrorists launched a simultaneous assault from two directions, according to a statement signed by Captain Mohammed Goni, the Acting Military Information Officer for the Joint Task Force North East.
Military officials reported that the attack was detected through surveillance systems, prompting the deployment of a combat team to intercept the advancing militants. A heavy exchange of fire ensued, and a separate group attempting to bypass the combat team was also thwarted.
Following the coordinated response, the insurgents withdrew, with troops conducting a hot pursuit and assessing the area and routes used by the attackers. During the operation, several militants were neutralized, and military personnel recovered significant weaponry, including AK-47 rifles, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, and various other equipment. Surveillance footage indicated that the terrorists were seen dragging the bodies of fallen comrades toward the Timbuktu Triangle.
No casualties were reported among military personnel during this engagement. The Theatre Command praised the troops of the 162 Amphibious Battalion for their effective response to the attack.
“Operation HADIN KAI remains resolute in its determination to dominate the battlespace, deny terrorists freedom of action, and restore lasting peace and security across the North East,” the statement concluded.
