2027: Atiku suing Tinubu over certificate discrepancy dead on arrival – Lawyer Idam

Activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has criticized the decision of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to take legal action against President Bola Tinubu regarding inconsistencies in his election certificate. Idam termed this move an “action that is dead on arrival.”

In comments made to the press, Idam suggested that Nigeria’s judicial system lacks the resolve to ensure justice in such cases. The lawsuit, filed by Abubakar, alleges discrepancies in the names listed on Tinubu’s form submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and seeks to disqualify the president from participating in the 2027 election.

Idam stated that regardless of the outcome, the legal proceedings would highlight the deficiencies within the Nigerian judicial system. “That is the sentiment of most Tinubu supporters, and regrettably, that may well be the reality confronting the suit,” he remarked, emphasizing that issues with the judicial framework, rather than the merits of the case itself, could impede justice.

He further added, “Whether the action succeeds or fails, it will continue to expose the weaknesses of our institutions and subject them to public scrutiny.”

Idam warned that the greatest threat to democracy is a lack of faith among citizens in the impartial application of the law. He expressed concern about Nigeria’s capacity to uphold a just system without fundamental institutional reforms, stating, “With the way things are going, I seriously doubt whether Nigeria can sustain a system worthy of human existence beyond 2031.”
