Police launch ‘Operation Velvet’ to enforce traffic laws in Jigawa
Jigawa State Police Launch Traffic Enforcement Operation
The Jigawa State Police Command is set to initiate a statewide enforcement operation designed to address ongoing violations of traffic laws. The operation, dubbed “Operation Velvet,” will begin on Monday, August 24, 2026.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Lawal Shiisu Adam announced the operation in a statement released on Sunday. It will be conducted simultaneously across all 27 local government areas in Jigawa State with the support of relevant security and traffic management agencies.
The primary objectives of the operation include enforcing compliance with road traffic regulations, reducing preventable road accidents, and safeguarding the lives and property of motorists, passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.
As part of the initiative, joint enforcement teams will engage in proactive patrols, stop-and-search operations, and targeted enforcement activities on major roads, urban centers, markets, motor parks, and other traffic-heavy locations.
Specific traffic violations that will be addressed include the overloading of passengers, goods, or animals; reckless driving; reverse driving; failure to display number plates or maintain valid documentation; operating unroadworthy vehicles; and illegal parking. The enforcement teams will also focus on additional infractions such as obstructing traffic, disregarding traffic signals, dangerous vehicle operation, and unauthorized use of tinted glass.
Additionally, a mobile court will be established to expedite the processing of traffic violation cases. Individuals arrested for traffic offenses will be handled according to legal procedures and may be prosecuted in the mobile court as necessary.
Commissioner of Police CP Tijjani Murtala has instructed personnel involved in the operation to uphold professionalism, fairness, and respect for citizens’ rights. He also cautioned against extortion, corruption, abuse of power, and other unprofessional behaviors.
The commissioner called on commercial drivers, motorcycle and tricycle operators, transport unions, and all road users to cooperate with enforcement teams, ensuring that their vehicles are roadworthy and that they possess valid documentation.
