EndSARS: ‘Price Nigerian youths paid for demanding better country’ — Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), commemorated the sixth anniversary of the Lekki Toll Gate shootings on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The incident, which occurred during the #EndSARS protests in Lagos, has become a symbol of the struggle for justice and human rights in Nigeria.

In a statement released on the anniversary, Obi referred to the event as a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by Nigerian youths in their quest for a better country. He emphasized the need for justice, accountability, and respect for human rights, reflecting on the impact of that tragic night when peaceful protesters were confronted with gunfire, resulting in loss of life and injuries.

“We must never forget. We must never normalize injustice,” Obi stated. He expressed his belief that a more just and equitable Nigeria is achievable—a nation where citizens are safeguarded rather than oppressed, where the voices of young people are amplified rather than stifled, and where government authority is exercised with responsibility and respect for individual rights.

Obi concluded his remarks by paying tribute to the victims, stating, “May the souls of the departed continue to rest in peace. May their sacrifice strengthen our resolve to build a Nigeria where this tragedy will never be repeated.” He reiterated, “A New Nigeria is possible—a Nigeria where every life matters.”
