Two building collapses claim five lives in Kano
Five people have died following two separate building collapses in Kano State, according to the Kano State Fire Service.
The incidents occurred Saturday in Gaida, within the Kumbotso Local Government Area, and in Kurna, part of the Fagge Local Government Area.
In a statement released Sunday by ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer for the Kano State Fire Service, emergency responders received distress calls at approximately 2:34 p.m. and 2:40 p.m.
At the Gaida site, an incomplete building under construction collapsed while six workers were present. Fire service personnel successfully rescued two workers—17-year-old Muhammad Hassan and 19-year-old Khalid Abubakar—while four others were recovered unconscious and later confirmed dead. The deceased were identified as Sunusi Surajo, 18; Bashir Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim Ibrahim, 25; and Abubakar, 30. All six victims were transported to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital before being handed over to Inspector Adamu Garba of the Kofar Wanbai Police Division.
The second incident took place at an Islamiyya school, Khadija Idris Bala, in Kurna, behind a local primary school. The collapse affected nine students. Eight students were rescued unharmed, including Hassana Isah, Usaina Isah, Zulaihat M. Gambo, Nawara Yahaya, Nusaiba Isah, Hasiya Munir, Khadija Isah, and Hadiza Haruna. The ninth victim, 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad, was found unconscious and later pronounced dead. The victims were returned to school headmaster Muhammad Gambo Usman.
The Fire Service stated that investigations into the causes of the building collapses are ongoing. They urged building owners, contractors, and construction workers to prioritize safety measures and ensure compliance with approved construction standards.
