Edo: Police arrest suspected vandals of AIT equipment, two others over stolen SUVs


Edo State Police have arrested two individuals suspected of vandalizing equipment worth approximately 150 million naira belonging to Africa Independent Television (AIT). The arrests took place along the Benin–Idogbo Road in the Ikhueniro Community.

The suspects, identified as 26-year-old Martins Donatus and 28-year-old Mohammed Abubakar, were taken into custody after authorities received a report of the vandalism on August 10, 2026. Police Commissioner Patrick Daaor detailed the incident while presenting the suspects alongside others on charges of different crimes during a press conference in Benin City.

“On the day of the incident, at about 11:39 a.m., the Command was alerted about the vandalism at AIT’s premises,” Daaor said. “Both suspects were found in possession of television master control room transmission equipment, valued at around 150 million naira. The equipment has been recovered, and the suspects are cooperating with investigators to identify additional members of the syndicate.”

In a separate case, the police commissioner reported the detention of two individuals for the alleged theft of Toyota Highlander SUVs. On August 15, 2026, at approximately 1 p.m., a surveillance team from the Okhoro Division conducted a patrol and intercepted two Toyota Highlander vehicles at Five Junction, off Iheya–Uselu Lagos Road in Benin City.

One of the vehicles was confirmed to be stolen. During the search, authorities discovered a toy gun inside one of the vehicles. The police have initiated an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the vehicle thefts and ascertain the identities of those involved.
