Xenophobia: South Africa denies suspending visas for Nigerians

The South African Consulate in Lagos has denied claims that it has halted visa issuance to Nigerian applicants amid ongoing anti-migrant protests in South Africa.

Consul General Prof. Bobby Moroe addressed the rumors during a round-table discussion hosted by the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, focusing on the topic of xenophobia in South Africa.

Moroe emphasized that Nigerian applicants who meet the visa requirements will continue to receive visas, irrespective of the protests. “Visas continue to be issued in spite of the ongoing protests, and Nigerians are still visiting the country for tourism and other legitimate purposes,” he stated.

The consul general reiterated that there would be no discrimination against Nigerian travelers due to the current situation and noted that visas would only be denied if applicants fail to provide the necessary documentation. “We wish to make it clear again that Nigerians under these circumstances will never be discriminated against,” Moroe added. “No basis will justify why your visa is rejected except that you may not have provided the requirements.”

Additionally, Moroe announced the introduction of an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, which aims to modernize and simplify South Africa’s travel authorization process. He explained that the digital platform would help reduce paperwork and improve efficiency in visa applications. Prospective visitors can submit their applications via mobile devices, making travel authorization more convenient and secure.
