Cuban Foreign Minister Accuses U.S. of Eroding Cuban Resolve Amid Energy Crisis
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez has accused the United States of attempting to undermine the “political will” of the Cuban people through what he termed “cruel aggression.” His remarks come amidst escalating tensions and a worsening energy crisis on the island, which has been exacerbated by recent U.S. policies.
Rodriguez expressed these concerns following a statement from the Kremlin. Russian officials have alerted the international community that Cuba’s energy situation is critical, attributing the crisis to U.S. “suffocating measures” that have severely affected the country’s economy. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that Moscow is exploring “possible solutions” to assist Havana.
Cuba has been particularly affected since former U.S. President Donald Trump curtailed oil shipments from Venezuela, following a controversial raid that resulted in the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The U.S. has also threatened tariffs against nations that continue to supply fuel to Cuba, a move that adds to the decades-long sanctions imposed by Washington.
“The situation is really critical in Cuba,” Peskov said during a briefing, emphasizing the difficulties faced by the nation due to U.S. actions. In a separate statement, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed solidarity with both Cuba and Venezuela, emphasizing that those countries should determine their own destinies.
Amid these geopolitical tensions, Cuba is grappling with severe fuel shortages that have led to drastic measures, including the introduction of a four-day workweek for state enterprises, restrictions on fuel sales, and the suspension of university operations. Additionally, international airlines such as Air Canada have announced suspensions of flights to Cuba, citing a lack of available jet fuel.
For several weeks, Russia has condemned U.S. policies regarding Cuba, labeling them “unacceptable” and warning of a potential humanitarian crisis. This criticism unfolds against the backdrop of ongoing international condemnation of Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, which have left millions without power amid harsh winter conditions.
On Monday, Rodriguez reaffirmed Cuba’s readiness to engage in dialogue with the U.S., asserting that discussions would occur on Cuba’s terms. President Miguel Diaz-Canel has also indicated a willingness to talk, but only if conditions allow for fair negotiations.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has voiced opposition to the sanctions affecting Cuba, declaring that the measures are “not right.” She emphasized Mexico’s commitment to restoring oil shipments to Cuba, despite the potential economic repercussions from the U.S.
Recent sanctions have led Trump to label Cuba as “an unusual and extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security, intensifying tensions further. As the situation develops, the international community watches closely, especially given the humanitarian implications for the Cuban population.
