Police, Army move to restore calm after deadly violence in Lagos
LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Police Command, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, has increased security presence in the Ikola area following a violent clash that resulted in three fatalities, two injuries, and property damage.
The incident occurred on Thursday, August 27, 2026. According to a police statement, order has since been restored in the affected area.
Preliminary reports indicate that the disturbance began when a group of individuals, suspected to be local area boys, confronted a tricycle rider and demanded a fee of ₦200. The rider’s refusal to comply reportedly led to the group seizing his tricycle.
In response, the rider returned with others, escalating tensions between the two groups. The ensuing clash resulted in three deaths and injuries to two individuals, with several buildings reportedly set ablaze.
Both the deceased and the injured have been transported to the Military Hospital in Yaba for medical care and treatment.
Following the violence, Lagos State Commissioner of Police Tijani Olaiwola Fatai and Brigadier General Afolabi Owolabi, the Commander of the 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, visited the scene to assess the situation and coordinate a security response.
The police have deployed multiple units to the area, including the Rapid Response Squad, Task Force, Tactical Squad, Police Mobile Force, Eko Strike Force, and the Violent Crime Response Unit.
“The situation is firmly under control, and efforts are ongoing to prevent any further escalation,” the police statement emphasized. An investigation into the incident has been launched, and authorities pledged to pursue legal action against those found responsible for the violence.
Residents are urged to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information that could exacerbate tensions. The police encourage community members to provide credible information to assist in the investigation and public safety efforts.
Authorities assure the public that they are committed to maintaining peace and monitoring the area to prevent any further disturbances.
