Police detain officer over shooting that killed 22-year-old UNIPORT graduate

The Rivers State Police Command has announced the detention of a police officer involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of 22-year-old Anthony Obodo in Port Harcourt.
In a statement released Friday by Police Public Relations Officer ASP Blessing Agabe Kaborlo, preliminary investigations indicated that the incident occurred on August 27, 2026, during an altercation between Obodo and the officer. During this encounter, a firearm was discharged, leading to Obodo’s fatal injury and wounding two bystanders.
The officer, identified as Corporal Alfred Louis, reportedly suffered injuries after being attacked by an angry mob following the incident. Both Corporal Louis and members of his team have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. Disciplinary action will be administered based on the investigation’s findings.
The police command emphasized that the actions displayed in this incident were unacceptable and do not align with the standards of professionalism expected in policing. They asserted their commitment to enforcing strict disciplinary measures against officers found to be in violation of conduct standards.
The public was assured that the police force would hold accountable any officer whose actions could undermine the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
Obodo was a recent graduate of the University of Port Harcourt.
