Security forces neutralize scores of bandits in Sokoto
A gun battle between armed bandits and a joint team of police and military forces in Maikujura village, located in the Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State, resulted in the deaths of numerous bandits early Friday morning.
According to a statement from the Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ahmad Rufa’i, the operation stemmed from credible intelligence received by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Rabah regarding a large group of armed bandits heading toward Maikujura with stolen livestock.
Rufa’i stated that the bandits were allegedly en route to their hideout in the notorious Gundumi Forest when the DPO mobilized tactical units, including the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and the Violence Crime Response Unit, in conjunction with personnel from a military Forward Operating Base.
In a strategic effort to intercept the bandits, Rufa’i noted that security operatives successfully blocked their route, which led to a fierce confrontation. He reported that the bandits were overpowered by superior firepower and tactical maneuvers, prompting them to retreat into the nearby forest with gunshot wounds.
Following the confrontation, security personnel searched the surrounding area and recovered the bodies of several fallen bandits, along with two AK-47 rifles, 52 rounds of live ammunition, approximately 15 motorcycles, and 62 rustled animals.
Rufa’i confirmed that there were no reported casualties among the security forces or local residents during the operation. The owners of the recovered livestock have been identified, and arrangements are in place to return their animals.
In addition, nearby police divisions have been placed on high alert to monitor for any injured bandits who may seek medical help or attempt to hide in their areas.
Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, Hassan Hayatu Shaffa, commended the police and military personnel involved in the operation for their professionalism, bravery, and prompt response. He also urged residents to provide security agencies with timely and credible information to aid ongoing efforts to combat banditry and protect communities throughout the state.
