Residents scoop diesel after tanker accident in Kaduna
A tanker filled with 24,000 liters of diesel lost control while attempting to navigate around a Toyota Hilux on Saturday morning, resulting in an accident on the Nnamdi Azikiwe Bypass Expressway in Kaduna.
Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported. However, the tanker’s cover was dislodged during the incident, causing diesel to overflow onto the roadway.
In the aftermath, local residents were observed collecting the spilled diesel in various containers, including jerry cans and plates.
Ruth Baba, a 25-year-old student at Kaduna State University, shared her motivations for participating in this effort. “I have nobody to assist me with my school fees since the death of my parents. This is an opportunity for me to work for my education,” she said.
Josee Bande, a 45-year-old resident involved in scooping diesel, expressed his desperation. “I have nothing to eat because I don’t have money. My family is hungry. With what I was able to collect, I can pay my rent and buy food for my family,” he said.
The driver of the tanker was reported to be in stable condition following the accident. Efforts to obtain comments from the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission in Kaduna were unsuccessful, as he did not answer calls or respond to text messages.
