Transfer: Emi Martinez names two legends that convinced him to join Chelsea
Chelsea Football Club has announced the signing of goalkeeper Emi Martinez, marking the team’s 12th acquisition during the summer transfer window. The World Cup champion joins the Blues from Aston Villa for a reported fee of £7.5 million.
In his first interview with Chelsea, Martinez cited club legends Petr Cech and John Terry as pivotal figures in his decision to move to Stamford Bridge. “I worked with Petr Cech, one of the best goalkeepers in Chelsea’s history,” Martinez said. “I spoke with JT, a legend of the game at Chelsea. Obviously, they speak highly of the club. I want to be part of that club, with them.”
Martinez’s recruitment comes in response to the performance issues of current goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who faced criticism following a series of errors in a recent match against Fulham. Coach Xabi Alonso indicated that Sanchez would need to find a new club before the transfer window closes.
Although Chelsea initially focused on offloading players before pursuing new signings, the opportunity to bring in Martinez shifted their strategy. The 33-year-old had attracted interest from several clubs, including Juventus, but ultimately chose to join Chelsea, where he aims to make a significant impact.
