Manchester United Pursues Transfer for Crystal Palace Striker Jean-Philippe Mateta
Manchester United has been presented with the opportunity to acquire Jean-Philippe Mateta, a striker for Crystal Palace and the French national team, ahead of the impending transfer deadline.
Mateta joined Crystal Palace from Bundesliga side Mainz in 2022 for £9 million. Since his arrival, the 29-year-old has registered 62 goals and provided 14 assists across all competitions, establishing himself as a vital contributor to the club. His efforts have helped the team secure victories in the FA Cup, the Europa Conference League, and the Community Shield under former manager Oliver Glasner.
However, Mateta’s standing with the fanbase has been challenged following an attempt to transfer to AC Milan last winter. The move did not materialize after he failed to pass a medical examination at the San Siro, leading to notable criticism from supporters.
As the summer transfer window progresses, uncertainty continues to surround Mateta’s future. The forward has reportedly declined several contract offers from Crystal Palace while exploring options with other clubs.
Recently, Aston Villa emerged as a contender for Mateta’s signature, submitting a bid reportedly valued between £25 million and £35 million as they look to replace Ollie Watkins. However, this offer was quickly rejected, deemed insufficient by Palace officials who have set a higher asking price for the 6-foot-4-inch center-forward.
According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have been given the opportunity to pursue Mateta as they seek additional attacking options before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.
This summer, Manchester United has focused on bolstering its midfield, successfully signing Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba from Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Brighton, respectively. Meanwhile, Tottenham has made several additions to its squad, including Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Savio, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senese, Andrew Robertson, and Martin Dubravka. Earlier this week, the north London club also confirmed the acquisition of Omar Marmoush on a season-long loan from Manchester City.
