NSCDC busts illegal gold mining site in Abuja, arrest two
The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have conducted a successful operation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that led to the arrest of two individuals suspected of engaging in illegal gold mining.
The enforcement action took place in the Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT and was initiated based on credible intelligence and a petition regarding unauthorized mining activities within the confines of a valid exploration license.
According to an NSCDC statement, a specialized enforcement unit was deployed to the area where the suspects were taken into custody at an active gold extraction site. Preliminary investigations indicated that mining operations were being conducted outside the boundaries of an approved mineral title area, raising significant regulatory concerns about the unauthorized exploitation of the country’s mineral resources.
The NSCDC outlined additional worries regarding environmental degradation and security threats arising from these illegal activities. Local residents had previously expressed concerns over the impact of unregulated mining in their vicinity.
The suspects are currently assisting investigators, who are working to identify and apprehend others connected to the operation. The investigation will also examine the circumstances surrounding the mining activities at the site and any potential violations of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act.
John Onoja Attah, the Commander of the Mining Marshals, emphasized the commitment to eradicating illegal mining, stating that no region of the country would serve as a refuge for such activities. He reiterated that ongoing enforcement operations aim to ensure legal compliance among mining operators, while also holding violators accountable.
“This operation aligns with the vision and firm directive of the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, that all efforts must be made to combat illegal mining and other forms of economic sabotage threatening Nigeria’s national assets,” Attah said.
He noted that under Audi’s leadership, the Corps has enhanced inter-agency cooperation and operational intelligence, intensifying enforcement actions to restore order and confidence in the solid minerals sector.
Attah warned that all individuals or groups involved in illegal mining would be identified and prosecuted according to the law, reaffirming the Mining Marshals’ determination to disrupt and dismantle illegal mining networks across the country.
