Emir’s Killing: Group calls for investigation into election violence in Osun
OSUN STATE, Nigeria — The Osun Youth Initiative for Good Governance (OYIGG) has called for a thorough investigation into reports of pre-election violence in Osun State, urging authorities to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
In a statement, OYIGG condemned the killing of Olalekan Oyeyemi, also known as Emir Ajagungbade, and expressed concern regarding an internal conflict involving the Accord party in the state, which they say echoes previous comments made by Senator Francis Fadahunsi.
Dr. Adeyemi Akande, the National Convener of OYIGG, voiced alarm over the reported violence that occurred leading up to the recent governorship election. The organization claims that over 22 individuals were killed during this period and questioned why those allegedly involved have not been arrested or prosecuted.
“We are surprised that over 22 law-abiding citizens were allegedly killed during the pre-election period, yet Governor Adeleke never deemed it fit to order the police and other security agencies to arrest those responsible,” the statement read.
The group criticized the governor for taking action only after the death of a known criminal figure linked to his party. “But today, a notorious thug has been killed, and the Governor has suddenly woken up and given a marching order because the Emir was allegedly a member of his party and an aide,” OYIGG stated.
Additionally, OYIGG alleged that Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu had previously raised concerns with Governor Adeleke regarding the presence of wanted individuals at the Osun State Government House. The organization accused the governor of sheltering these individuals, which they claim include suspected political thugs, and urged him to facilitate their investigation by law enforcement.
The police had declared Oyeyemi wanted on charges including murder and terrorism. OYIGG called for the relevant authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding these allegations.
Dr. Akande also noted that both Oyeyemi and another individual, known as Solo-Iwara, were reportedly seen frequently in the Ilesa area prior to the governorship election, suggesting their presence coincided with violence against opposition supporters.
In conclusion, OYIGG urged the citizens of Osun to resist any form of intimidation from political parties and called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incidents of pre-election violence, identify those responsible, and ensure that justice is served.
