Eto’o faces Cameroon probe over alleged Russia payment
Samuel Eto’o, the former forward for Chelsea and Barcelona, is under investigation for alleged financial misappropriation as the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT).
The Association of Amateur Football Clubs of Cameroon (ACFAC) has launched a formal inquiry into both FECAFOOT and Eto’o following reports that indicate potential financial irregularities.
Eto’o is reportedly accused of unlawfully accepting payments from the Russian Football Union in relation to a friendly match held in October 2023. ACFAC’s statement alleges that the Russian Football Union violated its contract with FECAFOOT by transferring approximately €567,000 (about $655,000) to an account not registered under the federation.
In response to the allegations, ACFAC plans to pursue legal action against Eto’o in Cameroon’s judicial system and intends to file a complaint against the Russian Football Union in Russia.
Last month, Eto’o publicly supported FIFA President Gianni Infantino amid ongoing controversies surrounding his leadership, claiming that Infantino “has committed no wrongdoing” despite increasing calls for his resignation related to a contentious commercialization initiative concerning the World Cup.
