Four Killed in Early Morning Traffic Crash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
Ogun State authorities have reported that four individuals were killed and another injured in a road accident early Wednesday on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The collision occurred at approximately 4 a.m. near Straight Gate School in Ipara Remo, along the route. It involved eight people and two vehicles: a blue Mitsubishi Cabstar, registration number FGE 753 XA, and an ash-colored HOWO truck, registration number T-695 KT.
According to the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the driver of the Mitsubishi was traveling at high speed when he attempted to overtake the truck and subsequently collided with it. Initial investigations indicated that speed violation and wrongful overtaking were the primary causes of the crash, while driver fatigue was also noted as a contributing factor.
Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, a spokesperson for the FRSC, provided details of the incident in a statement to reporters. He confirmed that four male adults lost their lives in the accident, while another male adult sustained injuries. Three other individuals involved in the crash were uninjured.
“The Mitsubishi driver, reportedly fatigued, crashed into the moving truck while attempting to overtake at high speed,” Odunsi said.
The FRSC rescue team received a distress call at 4:33 a.m. and arrived at the scene six minutes later. The injured victim was transported to Victory Hospital in Ogere for medical treatment, and the deceased were taken to the FOS Mortuary in Ipara.
The two vehicles have since been handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division in Isara for further investigation.
Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, the Ogun State Sector Commander, urged motorists to exercise caution by avoiding speeding, driving while fatigued, and engaging in dangerous overtaking, particularly during early-morning travel. He also advised those embarking on long-distance journeys to ensure they are well-rested and to overtake only when it is safe and permitted.
