2027: Nigeria traumatised, needs experienced ‘father figure’ like Atiku — ADC
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has characterized Nigeria as a nation in distress, emphasizing the need for experienced political leaders to navigate its current difficulties. The party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, is viewed as crucial for steering the country through these challenges.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, expressed these sentiments during a Tuesday interview with News Central, in defense of the party’s selection of Atiku and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi as its candidates for the 2027 election.
In response to comparisons with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi addressed concerns regarding the prior political affiliations of both Atiku and Amaechi. He stated that having previously held public office should not disqualify anyone from future candidacy, particularly when considering Atiku’s extensive experience amid Nigeria’s current turmoil.
Abdullahi drew parallels between Nigeria’s situation today and that of South Africa during its transition from apartheid, when the African National Congress (ANC) chose Nelson Mandela over younger party members. “In a nation that had been traumatized, the party recognized the importance of selecting a father figure, someone with experience and maturity,” he said.
He believes Atiku possesses the capability to fulfill a similar leadership role in Nigeria, emphasizing his deep understanding of the country’s political landscape and historical context. Abdullahi noted, “Nigeria has been traumatized… We’ve lost more people to terrorism and banditry than at any other time in our history.”
Further highlighting the nation’s struggles, Abdullahi mentioned deteriorating economic conditions, claiming that Nigerians are currently poorer than in previous years. He argued that Atiku’s wealth of experience, paired with Amaechi’s vigor, would create a necessary balance to tackle the country’s pressing issues. “You need someone with the quality of experience that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar brings, alongside the energy and drive of a Rotimi Amaechi to support it,” he said.
