Police record 198 convictions, 240 arrests in Yobe
The Yobe State Police Command has reported securing 198 convictions and arresting 240 suspects for various offenses since July as part of its ongoing efforts to combat crime in the region.
Commissioner of Police Usman Kanfani Jibrin provided this update during a press briefing in Damaturu on Wednesday. According to Jibrin, the command has recorded 145 criminal cases during this period, including 16 murders, nine rapes, one kidnapping, two extortion cases, five instances of armed robbery, and 112 other offenses.
In terms of legal outcomes, Jibrin indicated that 198 cases resulted in convictions, while two suspects were acquitted. He noted that 26 cases are currently pending in court, 10 are still under investigation, and four are awaiting legal advice.
“These gains reflect our commitment to detaining offenders while ensuring thorough investigations and firm prosecution,” said Jibrin.
The police’s tactical units also made significant progress, arresting 171 individuals suspected of drug offenses and recovering various illicit drugs, banned substances, and dangerous weapons.
Additionally, Jibrin reported that one suspect under investigation for financial crimes was arrested for fraud and misappropriating 77 million naira. Another suspect was detained for allegedly obtaining money and goods through fraudulent bank transfer alerts.
Using technical intelligence, officers arrested two individuals who allegedly extorted 630,000 naira from their victims, with both suspects confessing during questioning.
The command has also made strides in addressing cases of juvenile kidnapping and culpable homicide, with suspects arrested and brought to court.
Jibrin emphasized the command’s dedication to intelligence-led policing and fostering effective community partnerships in their law enforcement efforts.
