Electricity: ‘Our freezers now freezing’ – Power Minister says Nigerians begging him to slow down
Minister of Power Reports Improvements in Electricity Supply
ABUJA, Nigeria — Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe acknowledged significant advancements in electricity supply in recent months, but noted that some Nigerians have requested a reduction in service improvements due to concerns about their appliances.
At the commissioning of a new 3-megawatt solar hybrid power project at the University of Abuja, Tegbe relayed feedback from consumers reporting an increase in electricity availability. He said some areas that previously experienced prolonged outages of up to three months are now receiving up to 18 hours of power daily.
“Some residents have contacted me to slow down the improvements, stating that their freezers are running continuously and freezing everything,” Tegbe said. “That is what freezers are designed to do — to preserve food.”
The minister reiterated his commitment to enhancing electrical supply, promising noticeable changes within three to six months. However, he also addressed ongoing issues in the power sector, highlighting that many of the country’s electricity infrastructures are over 40 years old.
Tegbe expressed particular concern regarding the vandalism of critical infrastructure, revealing that vandals had recently damaged three major transmission towers in Birnin Kebbi.
