Customs seizes 56 containers of prohibited items worth N5.53bn
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized 56 containers of prohibited items valued at 5.53 billion naira. The announcement was made by Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi on Tuesday at the Port Harcourt II Area Command in Onne, Rivers State.
Adeniyi stated that this operation is part of a broader initiative focused on intelligence-driven and risk-based strategies. These efforts are aimed at preventing prohibited, restricted, and improperly declared consignments from entering the Nigerian market, which could hinder local businesses.
He emphasized that the unchecked importation of goods that can be locally produced puts additional strain on Nigerian farmers, manufacturers, and other domestic producers. This situation can lead to unfair competition, diminished demand for local products, and ultimately deter investment in domestic value chains.
“The economic impact is particularly significant in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors,” Adeniyi noted. He added that the large-scale importation of products that Nigeria has the capacity to produce may undermine the Federal Government’s initiatives to bolster local industries, enhance food security, create jobs, and diversify the economy.
