Kano State Government Warns Against Artificial Fruit Ripening
KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Government has issued a warning to fruit sellers and citrus dealers to refrain from using chemicals or other substances to artificially ripen fruits or enhance their appearance. This advisory was released by the Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KCPC) following recent inspections conducted at various fruit markets throughout the state.
The inspections aimed to assess the storage and sale practices of fruits before they reach consumers. Dr. Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, Executive Secretary of the KCPC, emphasized the agency’s commitment to consumer safety and indicated that the council will take action against practices that jeopardize public health.
“We have received information indicating that some sellers may utilize chemicals to improve the visual appeal of fruits or accelerate the ripening process to attract buyers,” Dr. Muhammad said. He reiterated that the council will conduct ongoing inspections of fruit markets and will take necessary actions if harmful substances are detected.
Dr. Muhammad called on fruit sellers and dealers to adhere to safety regulations and to avoid any practices that could endanger consumer health.
In response, Alhaji Safiyanu Abdullahi C.K., Chairman of the Fruit Sellers and Citrus Dealers Association, stated that the association is actively educating its members on the importance of following the relevant regulations. Abdullahi noted that members are being encouraged to avoid any practices that could harm consumers.
