Four Arrested Following Alleged Assault on Police Officer in Calabar

CALABAR, Cross River State — Four individuals are set to be arraigned in court on Friday in connection with the alleged assault of a police officer at Watt Market.

The suspects, identified as Emem Asuquo, 40; Aniema Nelson, 40; Idara Bassey Sunday, 28; and Mercy Edet, 44, were among a group of 60 people detained by authorities following a disturbance at the market.

The Cross River State Police Command confirmed that the suspects were identified during the preliminary investigation into the incident. Evidence gathered has linked them to the assault on the officer.

The suspects are scheduled to appear before the court on September 18, 2026, to address the charges against them.

Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata stated that the police will respect the judicial process and emphasized that the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of competent jurisdiction.
