Fuel price hike: Give reasonable wage award to workers, create buffers – NLC to Nigerian govt
Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has called on the Nigerian government to implement immediate wage adjustments for workers in response to the recent increase in fuel prices, which have risen to 1,430 naira per liter.
In a statement released on Monday, Ajaero expressed concern over the impact of rising fuel costs on the economy and daily life for Nigerians. He noted that while prices in major cities hover around 1,430 naira, some rural areas face even higher costs.
“The increase in petrol prices has severe implications for wages and the overall wellbeing of our society,” Ajaero said. “Higher transportation costs will inevitably lead to increased prices for essential goods, such as food, rent, and school fees. This surge in costs is exacerbating poverty and diminishing the quality of life for many citizens.”
Ajaero emphasized the need for the government to take swift action to mitigate these effects. He proposed that the administration should ensure the sale of adequate crude oil in naira to local refineries and expand national storage capabilities to address energy emergencies and enhance security.
“The government must urgently provide fair wage increases for workers,” he said. “Implementing these measures will not only generate jobs and stimulate economic growth but also help to address ongoing security challenges.”
Ajaero’s remarks come as the government attempts to encourage fuel marketers to reduce prices in line with international crude oil rates, a strategy he believes was beginning to yield positive results.
