2027: ‘Directors in Abia use Keke to work under Otti’ – PDP guber candidate, Anosike
Dr. Kelechi Anosike, the Peoples Democratic Party’s gubernatorial candidate in Abia State, has criticized the welfare conditions for state workers, alleging that civil service directors are resorting to using tricycles, commonly known as Keke NAPEP, for their daily commutes. He highlighted these concerns during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday.
Anosike described the economic situation for Abia workers as dire, citing increased living costs and inadequate compensation under Governor Alex Otti’s administration. He claimed that the government has failed to meet minimum wage obligations, despite receiving substantial monthly allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee, amounting to billions of naira for both state and local governments.
If elected in 2027, Anosike pledged to prioritize the welfare of workers by proposing a minimum wage of N90,000. He also vowed to reinstate 15,000 workers who were terminated under Otti’s leadership.
“Despite the national benchmark of N70,000 for the minimum wage, many workers in Abia are receiving less, including amounts as low as N50,000,” Anosike stated. He emphasized the need for improved worker conditions, including health insurance.
Anosike also noted disparities in benefits for magistrates in Abia compared to those in other states, mentioning that no magistrate in the state has access to official vehicles, which he argued further illustrates the neglect of the civil service.
“Our goal is to restore the dignity of the Abia worker and give them a sense of belonging and motivation,” Anosike said.
He and other opposition candidates are preparing to challenge the incumbent governor of the Labour Party, Otti, in the upcoming 2027 elections.
