Global Rights Condemns Use of Live Ammunition Against Protesters in Minna
Minna, Niger State — Global Rights, a non-profit organization, has expressed deep concern regarding recent unrest in Minna, condemning the use of live ammunition by security forces to disperse protesters.
Reports indicate that security operatives began firing shots as demonstrations erupted in the Niger State capital, following the deaths of 37 individuals detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The incident has sparked significant public outcry and widespread protests across the state.
In a statement released on Friday, Global Rights criticized the deployment of live ammunition, emphasizing that while security agencies have a duty to maintain public order, this must be done lawfully and with respect for the right to life and peaceful assembly.
“The constitutional responsibility of security services is to protect Nigerians, safeguard lives and property, and uphold the rule of law, not to escalate situations through excessive or unlawful force,” the statement read. Global Rights further called for an immediate investigation into the reported use of live ammunition and demanded accountability for any violations, along with measures to ensure that affected families and protesters can pursue justice without fear of intimidation.
In response to the escalating tension, the Niger State Government has declared a 24-hour curfew, aiming to restore order amid the protests.
