Sowore Alleges President Tinubu Undergoing Medical Treatment in France
Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu is receiving medical treatment in France, contrary to official statements suggesting he is on vacation.
In a post on social media platform X on Sunday, Sowore expressed skepticism about Tinubu’s absence from the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). “Tinubu is not on vacation; he is receiving treatment in France, and they will package him to return as though nothing happened,” he stated.
The Presidency, however, maintains that Tinubu is in France for a planned three-week annual leave. Tinubu departed for Europe on August 30, initially traveling to London before continuing to Paris. Officials from the State House have reported that he conducted official meetings in Paris, including a discussion with Vincent Bolloré on September 18.
Tinubu’s absence from the 81st UNGA has been confirmed, with Vice President Kashim Shettima designated to lead Nigeria’s delegation to New York.
Sowore further alleged that the president’s failure to attend the UNGA may stem from concerns that the U.S. government could potentially issue an arrest warrant related to a past drug-dealing allegation. He criticized what he described as a lack of transparency surrounding Tinubu’s activities in France and asserted that many Nigerians have resigned themselves to the current circumstances.
He drew parallels between Tinubu’s situation and those of former presidents Umaru Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari, asserting that a trend of secrecy and meticulously controlled public appearances is being repeated.
“There is something inherently wrong with Nigeria,” Sowore remarked.
