Edo: Eight persons escape death by whisker, five injured, three unhurt in road crash
Eight individuals narrowly avoided serious injury in a multi-vehicle accident on Sunday at Ikpoba Hill, located on Murtala Muhammed Way in Benin City.
According to reports collected by DAILY POST, five people sustained injuries during the incident, while three others were unharmed. The accident involved six vehicles, including a tanker transporting groundnut oil.
Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Preye Ezekiel Bedford, confirmed that the tanker experienced brake failure while descending the hill from the Ikpoba Hill/Ramat Park area, which led to the collision with other vehicles.
Bedford noted that there were no fatalities in the accident and reaffirmed that a total of eight individuals were involved, with five injured and three escaping injury.
Eyewitness Ken Omusi indicated that the driver of the tanker attempted to regain control but lost control after hitting a pothole at the Ikpoba River Bridge. This loss of control caused the tanker to veer into oncoming traffic, resulting in a series of collisions.
Emergency responders from the Edo State Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Road Safety Corps, police, and fire service arrived at the scene to assist with rescue efforts and manage the situation.
Another eyewitness, Kayode Folorunsho Ogedengbe, described the chaotic scene, stating that he witnessed the tanker collide first with a Toyota Corolla, which then struck another vehicle, leading to further damage. Ogedengbe assessed the total number of damaged vehicles at six, including the tanker and an Eco bus. He reported that some victims required assistance to be freed from beneath the wreckage.
The incident caused significant traffic disruptions in the area, with motorists forced to navigate the affected section of the road.
