Wike Denies Allegations of Election Manipulation in Rivers State

ABUJA — Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has refuted claims suggesting that the political tactics employed by the G5 faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 presidential election influenced the outcome in Rivers State.
Wike stated that no evidence was presented at the tribunal to substantiate allegations that the Labour Party (LP) secured victory in the state.
The minister made these remarks following an inspection of ongoing projects in the FCT, where he indicated that a new political strategy is being devised in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
Wike noted that the PDP G5, which includes him as a member, implemented a strategy during the 2023 elections aimed at undermining former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s support in the South-South region. He asserted that Atiku was perceived as the primary political competitor, rather than LP presidential candidate Peter Obi.
“Our strategy was that you vote for Obi to ensure that Atiku’s votes were reduced,” Wike said.
He further explained that the South-South has historically been a stronghold for the PDP, and had the region voted predominantly for the party, Atiku would have benefited from the bloc’s collective strength.
Wike dismissed accusations of manipulation in Rivers State’s election outcomes, questioning why no results were presented to substantiate such claims. “Did anyone present any results from Rivers State that proves we lost? It is unfortunate, and we cannot change what has happened,” he remarked.
During the conversation, he emphasized that every political faction has its own strategies during elections, which are often kept confidential.
“We had our strategy, and regardless of whether it is accepted, it is not our responsibility to divulge it,” Wike stated.
Wike further elaborated that at that time, his political focus was on Atiku, arguing that the perception of Obi’s influence was largely a product of social media rather than an accurate reflection of electoral demographics.
“When strategizing to win an election, you assess various elements: who poses the greatest threat? If this person is my threat, then I must work to diminish their voter base,” he explained. “It is impossible to rig an election without popular support. Any attempt to do so will lead to pushback.”
In regard to ongoing projects in the FCT, Wike announced that the Kaura District road and the associated bridges are expected to be completed by December 15. He also highlighted the Collector Road C2 project in Life Camp, which is on track for completion later this month, as well as the Arterial Road N16 in Gwarinpa, which the contractor aims to finish by early January.
“This completed road will significantly impact the Gwarinpa area,” he said.
Additionally, Wike addressed the situation concerning the IBB Golf Course, which was closed due to a dispute among members. He noted that a committee, led by the President of the Court of Appeal, has been established to resolve the matter, following directives from President Bola Tinubu to reopen the facility, which is vital for both the Presidency and the diplomatic community.
Wike expressed optimism about the completion of these projects in advance of a scheduled tournament in November, calling it a potential “Christmas gift” to Abuja residents from the President.
He also discussed the progress of the FCT budget, revealing that implementation is underway following the President’s approval. He indicated that the 2026 capital budget has achieved at least a 60 percent performance rate, despite setbacks due to delayed releases that previously affected contractor payments.
In response to criticisms from lawmakers regarding a loan, Wike challenged politicians seeking re-election to demonstrate their accomplishments to voters. “If you want to run, present your case: assuming I took a loan, what did you accomplish? If the answer is nothing, it reflects poorly on your capabilities as a legislator,” he said.
Wike concluded by asserting that residents of Abuja have shown support for Philip Tanimu Aduda’s candidacy for the Senate.
