2027: I’ll resign if Nigeria doesn’t change in one year — Amaechi

Rotimi Amaechi, the vice-presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has pledged to resign from his position if Nigeria does not experience significant improvements within one year of the party assuming power in 2027.

In an interview on AIT’s Democracy Today on Wednesday, Amaechi outlined the ADC’s key priorities, emphasizing the importance of enhancing security, education, and the economy. He also highlighted the need to combat corruption, stating that funds intended for critical sectors are often misappropriated.

“We must tackle three issues: security, education, and the economy,” said Amaechi. “To address these areas, we need to reduce corruption because there is no money for anyone to steal.”

Additionally, Amaechi criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its decision to remove the fuel subsidy, asserting that Nigerians have not experienced tangible benefits from this policy. “What are the benefits of the subsidy? The funds are ending up in private pockets while others celebrate,” he claimed.

He expressed concern over the stark contrast between widespread poverty and extravagant festivities he observed in various parts of the country. Amaechi noted that he often feels uncomfortable at such events, questioning the sources of wealth in light of the national poverty levels. “I sit and ask myself, where are these people getting this money from, considering the high levels of poverty in Nigeria?” he remarked.

On economic matters, Amaechi stated that Nigeria relies heavily on imports, with the country sourcing over 46 percent of its finished goods from abroad. “Who are those importing? Nigeria is in trouble,” he said.

The ADC candidate also referred to recent incidents where President Tinubu was greeted with boos upon his arrival at Lagos International Airport, promising that an ADC administration would foster a more favorable relationship with the public. “If we become President, nobody will do that; they will be clapping for us because we will change Nigeria,” Amaechi asserted.

His one-year resignation pledge aligns with comments made by political rival Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who suggested that President Tinubu should remove him from office if he fails to secure the capital for the President in the upcoming election. In contrast, Amaechi emphasized his willingness to hold himself accountable based on the performance of an ADC government.

“I will say it. If Nigeria does not begin to change one year after we’ve come to office, come to me; I will resign,” he stated.
