Russian Drone Strikes Target Kyiv School and Key Bridge

KYIV, Ukraine — A Russian drone struck a school in Kyiv on Thursday, amid ongoing bombardments in the Ukrainian capital. According to officials, children and staff were in shelters at the time of the attack and there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the incident, noting the heightened concern for safety in the city as drone strikes continue.

In a separate incident, two drones targeted a vital bridge that connects eastern and western Kyiv, leading to the suspension of metro services and ground public transportation.

Additionally, Ukraine’s nuclear safety regulator reported that a Russian drone hit the grounds of a nuclear research facility in Kyiv on Wednesday, resulting in a fire. However, the facility’s test reactor remained undamaged. The regulator stated that the fire was quickly extinguished and that there were no injuries, underscoring that the reactor has been shut down since 2022.

The Ukrainian Air Force noted a significant increase in Russian drone activity in September, with 3,177 drone strikes recorded up to September 29, compared to 2,850 strikes in August.

In related developments, local authorities in Russia’s Belgorod region reported that one man was killed when a drone exploded in the town of Graivoron.

The recent uptick in attacks comes as the United Kingdom announced a new package of 31 sanctions against Russia. A statement from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office indicated that the sanctions aim to curb funding for the Kremlin, targeting individuals linked to the detention, torture, and indoctrination of Ukrainian civilians and children.

The UK government reiterated its commitment to supporting Ukraine in the ongoing conflict, which has drawn widespread condemnation for its barbarity.
