AFCON 2027Q: Queiroz’s contract terminated after Ghana’s shock defeat to Gambia
Carlos Queiroz has stepped down as the head coach of the Ghana national football team following a surprising defeat to Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the departure on its official platform.
The announcement comes just one month after Queiroz was reinstated as coach. The GFA stated that the decision to terminate his contract was reached by mutual agreement.
In a message published on the association’s website, Queiroz described the decision as challenging but necessary. “Both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars, and Ghanaian football above everything else,” he said.
Queiroz emphasized that “the necessary conditions were not fully established,” and acknowledged that recent performance was a contributing factor to the decision to conclude his tenure.
