Xenophobia: FG repatriates 111 Nigerians from South Africa

The Nigerian Federal Government has repatriated 111 citizens from South Africa, increasing the total number of evacuees since June to 2,037 amid rising concerns over xenophobic and Afriphobic violence in the region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the return in a statement issued on Sunday. The latest group of returnees arrived in Lagos on Thursday, October 8, 2026, aboard South African Airways Flight SA060.

The returnees comprised 44 men, 23 women, and 44 children. Upon their arrival, they were welcomed by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and other relevant government agencies.

The evacuation was financed by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), which contributed $265,854 specifically to assist in the return of 500 distressed Nigerians from South Africa. This recent operation marks the 15th consular evacuation since the initiative commenced on June 10, 2026. Of the total 2,037 Nigerians evacuated, the government has covered the repatriation costs for 1,388 individuals.

So far, 318 Nigerians have utilized one-way tickets funded by the RCCG, leaving an additional 182 tickets available under the church’s commitment.

The Federal Government has expressed gratitude to Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye and the RCCG for their support in facilitating the evacuation process.

In its statement, the government pledged to continue engaging with relevant stakeholders, including South African authorities, to combat xenophobia and promote the safety and welfare of Nigerian nationals residing in South Africa.

Nigerians currently living in South Africa are advised to comply with local laws, remain vigilant, and take precautions for their safety. The Ministry also urged citizens to maintain contact with the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and the Consulate General in Johannesburg for assistance as needed.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to offering timely support to citizens abroad and ensuring their welfare and security.
