WoPU commends Tinubu’s petroleum sector Intervention, urges transporters to reduce Fares, food distribution costs

Working People United Commends Federal Intervention in Fuel Sector

Working People United (WoPU) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Federal Government’s interim measures aimed at regulating petrol prices and easing the economic burden on Nigerians.

In a statement released on Sunday, WoPU National Coordinator-General Prince Williams Eniredonana Akporeha described the intervention as a positive step that could enhance the socioeconomic conditions for Nigerian workers, households, traders, and small business owners. The initiative is expected to have an impact on transportation costs and food prices, providing much-needed relief amid rising living expenses.

The organization expressed hope that the initiative would yield noticeable benefits over the next 30 days, underscoring that the effectiveness of the program should ultimately be evaluated based on the tangible relief it provides to the lives of everyday Nigerians.

As the country faces high living costs, WoPU emphasized the importance of measures that could alleviate transportation expenses and lessen financial pressures on households. The movement is optimistic about the potential broader positive impacts the intervention may have on critical sectors, including transportation, agriculture, and food distribution.

In response to the Federal Government’s actions, WoPU has called upon transport operators nationwide to adjust their fares in light of any reductions in their operating expenses resulting from lower petrol costs. The organization specifically appealed to commercial drivers, haulage operators, logistics companies, and food distributors to ensure that any savings are reflected in their pricing.

Transportation significantly contributes to the overall cost of food and essential goods. WoPU asserts that a reduction in transportation costs could lower market prices across the country, contingent upon favorable conditions in other supply chain aspects.

The movement urged transporters to reassess their fare structures and the costs associated with transporting goods, particularly food items. It stressed that the benefits stemming from the intervention should extend beyond fuel stations to markets, households, and workplaces.

WoPU cautioned that if petrol prices decrease without a corresponding reduction in transportation fares and haulage charges, ordinary Nigerians might not fully benefit from the intervention. The organization called on all stakeholders to approach the situation with fairness and a sense of collective responsibility.

In addition, WoPU has called on relevant government agencies to oversee the implementation of the intervention and promote transparent pricing practices to ensure that consumers reap the benefits of genuine cost reductions.

Many working individuals, who allocate a significant portion of their earnings to transportation and food, stand to gain from the initiative if it leads to more affordable commuting and essential goods.

However, WoPU emphasized that this intervention should be part of sustained efforts to address other underlying factors contributing to the high cost of living, including agricultural production expenses and transportation infrastructure challenges.

As a grassroots civic and political movement dedicated to redefining the role of Nigerian workers in shaping the nation’s economic and political landscape, WoPU asserts that economic policies must translate into better living conditions for ordinary Nigerians.

The movement welcomed the intervention and encouraged all stakeholders to contribute to ensuring that its benefits reach workers and households. It highlighted the next 30 days as a crucial opportunity for collective action to alleviate the cost of living, improve access to essential commodities, and enhance the purchasing power of Nigerians.
