Gov Bala Mohammed orders crackdown on illegal miners in Bauchi

Bauchi State Governor Issues Directive on Illegal Mining Operations
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has instructed the military and various security agencies to intensify efforts against illegal mining activities in the region. He emphasized that individuals found participating in these operations will face legal consequences, regardless of their political connections.
During a Thursday meeting of the State Security Council, Mohammed identified illegal mining as an escalating security threat, linking it to banditry and organized crime. “No individual, regardless of their status, power, or family ties to those in government, must be spared if found complicit,” he stated.
The governor acknowledged the efforts of security personnel in disrupting criminal networks in the local government areas of Alkaleri, Ningi, and Ganjuwa. However, he urged security forces to broaden their operations and patrols to other vulnerable communities to deter criminals from relocating to less-secured areas.
Additionally, Mohammed cautioned traditional rulers, community leaders, and local officials against illegal land allocation, sheltering suspicious individuals, or facilitating unauthorized access to mining sites. He warned that those found aiding such activities could face legal action and risk losing their positions.
“We will not allow the greed or negligence of a few to jeopardize the safety of millions,” he declared.
The governor also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian Army High Command for authorizing the deployment of two additional military battalions to Alkaleri and Tafawa Balewa local government areas. He acknowledged Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University for granting temporary use of its facilities in Tafawa Balewa town to accommodate one of the new battalions.
