2027: Opposition fragmented; It’ll take magic to stop Tinubu -  Dan Ulasi

PDP Leader Warns of Fragmentation Among Opposition Ahead of 2027 Elections

Chief Dan Ulasi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warned that the disunity among opposition parties could hinder efforts to prevent President Bola Tinubu from securing a second term in the 2027 general election.

Ulasi made these remarks during an interview on Arise Television’s The Morning Show on Friday. He discussed the ongoing divisions within the opposition, particularly highlighting reported conflicts among leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the party led by former Anambra State governor Peter Obi.

The PDP chieftain noted that the current fragmentation among opposition parties is greater than it was prior to the 2023 presidential election. He cautioned against underestimating Tinubu’s political acumen, asserting that to do so would be detrimental.

“In 2023, I stated on this platform that anyone who takes President Tinubu for granted is doing so at their own peril,” Ulasi said.

He characterized Tinubu as one of Nigeria’s most strategic politicians, recalling an opposition meeting held before the 2023 elections. During this meeting, some attendees expressed confidence that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would triumph over Tinubu.

Ulasi contested this optimism, questioning what efforts the opposition had made to validate the belief that Atiku would win.

“During that emergency meeting, I challenged the notion that we had already won,” he recalled. “I asked, ‘What has Atiku really done to show that he can defeat Tinubu?’”

Ulasi recounted that he was initially asked to leave the meeting after his challenge, but he returned when Atiku called him back.

“I reiterated my concerns, pointing out that despite the confidence in the room, Tinubu was still a formidable opponent,” he said.

Ultimately, Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election, a result Ulasi believes the opposition should learn from in order to avoid repeating past mistakes.

“As we head into another election cycle, the fragmentation within the opposition is even worse than it was in 2023,” he noted.

Ulasi assessed that defeating Tinubu will require extraordinary coordination among opposition parties, emphasizing the challenges posed by their current divisions.

“It will take something extraordinary to stop Tinubu at this point,” he stated. “Only time will tell how the political landscape will evolve, but as it stands, we face significant hurdles.”
