2027: Northern govs pledge total support for Tinubu

Northern Governors Pledge Support for President Tinubu
By Omeiza Ajayi, Abuja
Governors from Nigeria’s northern states have expressed unanimous support for President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the 1999 power-sharing agreement between the northern and southern regions.
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani delivered this message on behalf of his colleagues at the official opening of the Arewa for Asiwaju (A4A) national secretariat in Abuja, an event attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
“Everywhere, we support the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 100 percent,” Sani stated during the ceremony.
He recalled the mutual understanding reached in 1999, which allowed the North to hold the presidency for two consecutive terms. “In the last dispensation, President Buhari, of blessed memory, served for two consecutive terms, meaning eight years,” Sani noted.
Sani pointed out that the southern states had opportunities to nominate candidates but chose not to, underlining their commitment to the agreement, particularly in support of President Tinubu.
While acknowledging that the power-sharing arrangement lacks constitutional backing, Sani insisted on the necessity of honoring the commitment. “We don’t have any cause to now renege on that promise. Common sense dictates that we have to respect this mutual agreement,” he said.
The governor stated that all northern states support the president, declaring, “He has done exceedingly well, as enumerated by our national chairman.” He called on attendees to publicly endorse their positions, urging party members to work collaboratively to ensure Tinubu’s and Vice President Shettima’s success in the upcoming elections.
Sani also encouraged participants to extend their backing to members of the National Assembly, state governors, and state assembly members across the country.
Ibrahim Shekarau, Chairman of the A4A Board of Trustees, expressed gratitude to the Vice President for inaugurating the new secretariat, referring to him as “our leader in the northern part of Nigeria, the highest elected son of the land.”
Shekarau commended the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that their efforts are crucial for the party’s success. He acknowledged the presence of National Assembly members, governors, and party coordinators from all 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory.
He assured the secretariat’s staff that the trustees would continue their support, stating, “We have ten times more party supporters outside this building. We are determined. We are committed, and we will now hit the ground running in our mission.”
