Tinubu releases N4bn for payment of 600 ex-Nigeria Airways workers

President Releases Additional N4 Billion for Former Nigeria Airways Workers

ABUJA—President Bola Tinubu has approved the release of N4 billion as the second tranche of severance benefits for 600 former employees of Nigeria Airways.

The announcement was made in a statement by Maryann Duke, Senior Special Assistant on Communications and Press Secretary to Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele, on Monday. The latest payment follows the disbursement of N18 billion in September 2026, which addressed the entitlements of 2,700 former workers across the initial nine batches of severance payments.

According to the statement, the total gross severance benefits for the 600 beneficiaries is approximately N4.25 billion. After deductions totaling N212.55 million, the net amount disbursed stands at N4.04 billion.

The disbursement is part of the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to settle outstanding severance obligations to former employees of the now-defunct national carrier. Payments are being processed in batches, guided by the verification of eligible beneficiaries and their respective records to ensure that payments reach the rightful recipients.

“The Federal Government recognizes the prolonged wait experienced by former employees and their families,” the statement stated. “It remains committed to resolving legitimate outstanding claims through an orderly and transparent process while ensuring public funds are safeguarded through appropriate verification.”
