‘Deliberate’ car ramming of Australian MP an isolated incident, police say | Crime News

A 43-year-old man remains in police custody following an incident in which he allegedly struck independent lawmaker Helen Haines with his vehicle outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria. The man has been identified as a resident of Tarrawingee.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) described the case as an “isolated incident,” noting that there are no known additional threats related to the attack. Haines was hit by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV on Monday, approximately 200 kilometers (124 miles) northwest of Melbourne. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese characterized the incident as a “deliberate” act.
Haines, 65, underwent surgery overnight and, according to local media reports, has lost a leg and is currently in critical condition at a hospital in Melbourne.
Federal and state police are investigating potential charges against the suspect, including causing harm to a Commonwealth public official, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Albanese stated that the vehicle executed a U-turn before colliding with Haines, emphasizing the intentional nature of the act. He indicated that the motive of the alleged attacker remains unclear.
In a statement to ABC Radio, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke provided details from witnesses, who reported that Haines was struck twice before a bystander intervened. Ricky Jefferies, a former nurse and barber shop owner, ran to the scene and restrained the attacker, removing a knife from his possession. Jefferies initially believed it was a car accident but quickly recognized the gravity of the situation.
“I heard a loud bang with no brakes. It was crazy; I just ran out to see what was happening,” he recounted. “I didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation initially, and once it became relevant, I just did what I could.”
Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed her shock at the “deeply disturbing attack” and wished Haines a full recovery in a post on social media platform X. This incident underscores a troubling trend, as recent reports from federal police indicate an increase in threats and abuse directed at Australian politicians. Historically, politicians have maintained a high level of public accessibility without extensive security measures.
Albanese acknowledged that “the temperature has increased in recent times,” reflecting concerns about rising hostility towards public officials.
Haines has served as the independent MP for the Victorian seat of Indi since 2019. Previously a nurse and midwife, she has gained recognition for her advocacy on climate action and promoting transparency in government.
