Sabotage Suspected as Train Services Disrupted During Winter Olympics
Trains traveling through central Italy experienced delays exceeding an hour on Saturday due to suspected sabotage, coinciding with the ongoing 2026 Winter Olympics. The disruptions primarily affected routes between Naples and Rome, as well as those heading north toward Florence.
Transport Minister Matteo Salvini condemned the perpetrators responsible for the incidents, which follow similar disruptions last Saturday and a less severe incident earlier in the week. The Winter Olympics, hosted in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, run from February 6 to 22.
“These are hateful criminal acts aimed at workers and at Italy,” Salvini stated. He added his concern regarding the implications of such actions, urging that they not be downplayed or justified.
Investigations are underway into the discovery of burned cables along the high-speed rail line between Rome and Naples. Authorities are also examining two additional suspected acts of vandalism impacting the route between the capital and Florence.
An anarchist group has claimed responsibility for a prior attack last Saturday, coinciding with the opening day of the Olympics. This incident involved damage to rail infrastructure near Bologna, resulting in delays of up to two and a half hours across high-speed, intercity, and regional services.
